This site is all about brass playing.
 

Principally,  I am a trombone player. My side instruments are euphonium, bass flugelhorn and trumpet. During my professional career I performed in the classical, jazz and crossover domains.
After 35 years on the road I returned to New Zealand in 2003. New Zealand has a small market for performing musicians in comparison to Europe. Friends and colleagues kindly pointed me in the direction of teaching which is highly supported in the education system here.
 

Unexpectedly, I discovered that I had a real passion for teaching brass. Over the years I worked in several state and private schools in and around Auckland. Currently, I am employed at King's School and Saint Kentigern School, both high profile private education facilities.
 

After 8 years of full time teaching I developed specific educational strategies. My main approach is preparing individuals to perform in ensembles in the early stage of study. This keeps my students highly motivated. My 'baby' is the Saint Kentigern Jazz Band. The group consists of 18,  8 - 12 year old, boys who persistently win local competitions, and perform successfully at corporate functions.
I support the ABRSM exam platform on a regular basis.
 

Since 2006 I am Musical Director of the North Harbour Big Swing Band in Browns Bay, Auckland. This is a very committed community ensemble which frequently features international professional musicians. We rehearse weekly and perform a monthly ballroom dance event which is very well patronised.
 

Retirement is not in my life plan, and I look forward to new enterprises. One never knows what is around the next bend…
